REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE Thursday, December 10, 2009

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry

has the honour to present its

SEVENTH REPORT


Your committee, which was authorized by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 to examine and report on the current state and future of Canada’s forest sector respectfully requests supplementary funds for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.

The original and a supplementary budget application submitted to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration and the reports thereon of that Committee were printed in the Journals of the Senate on May 7, 2009 and on October 1, 2009.  On May 12, 2009, the Senate approved the release of $17,460 to the Committee and on October 6, 2009, the Senate approved the supplementary budget of $250,400.

Pursuant to Chapter 3:06, section 2(1)(c) of the Senate Administrative Rules, the current supplementary budget submitted to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration and the report thereon of that committee are appended to this report.

SPECIAL STUDY ON THE CURRENT STATE AND FUTURE OF CANADA’S FOREST SECTOR

SUPPLEMENTARY BUDGET

APPLICATION FOR BUDGET AUTHORIZATION FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING MARCH 31, 2010 

Extract from the Journals of the Senate, Tuesday, March 31, 2009:

The Honourable Senator Mockler moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Fortin-Duplessis:

That the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry be authorized to examine and report on the current state and future of Canada’s forest sector. In particular, the Committee shall be authorized to:

(a) Examine the causes and origins of the current forestry crisis;

(b) Examine the federal role in the forest sector in Canada;

(c) Develop a vision for the long-term positioning and competitiveness of the forest industry in Canada;

(d) Recommend specific measures to be put forward by the federal government to lay the foundations of that vision.

That the Committee submit its final report to the Senate no later than June 17, 2010.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

APPENDIX (B) TO THE REPORT 

THURSDAY, December 10, 2009

    The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration has examined the budget presented to it by the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry for the proposed expenditures of the said Committee for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010 for the purpose of its special study on the current state and future of Canada’s forest sector, as authorized by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. The said budget is as follows:
